Methodist Church in Italy

Chiesa Valdese
Chiesa Villa San Sebastiano

About us

The first methodist missionaries came to Italy from Great Britain in the second half of the 19th century. At first the methodist churches were set up in the north, then the movement was going slowly to the southern parts of the country. At the beginning of the 20th century the United Methodist Church in Italy was growing fast, but then difficult times of fascism and economical problems came. Thnks God the church survived and after the Second World War became an active ecumeny organizations founder.

Here you can read more detailed history.

Since 1979 the Waldensian and the Methodist churches are parts of a covenant named the Union of Methodist and Waldensian Churches. The union allows the churches to save their independence, administration and organization and in the same tima to share thier pastors, have one common theological college and run social, media and ecclesiastic projects together.

The community has become a multicultural assembly. Since Italy has become a destination for immigrants from all the world, the local churches are places, where they can worship God in many languages and find help.

We are also engaged in many ecumenical activities, helping immigrants, children, women, continuing inter religious dialogues in Italy, Europe and all the World.

Today United Methodists gather in 49 local churches, we are community of around 5,000 members.

In 1979 the Covenant unided both the Methodist and the Waldensian Churches into one Assembly.
