International Women’s Day is held on March 8 each year to honor and celebrate the achievements of women and highlight challenges and the need for action to reach gender equality.

The day has been commemorated for well over a century. This year’s international theme is #ChoosetoChallenge.

The World Council of Churches celebrates International Women’s Day each year with its ecumenical partners.   A joint prayer service by women at the Ecumenical Centre in Geneva – World Council of Churches, The Lutheran World Federation, and ACT Alliance – will be held on March 8. Amanda Khozi Mukweshi, Chief Executive Officer, Christian Aid, will lead reflections.

This year, Thursdays in Black Ambassadors have prepared special prayers to support women facing sexual abuse and violence and to highlight international solidarity to overcome gender-based violence. The prayers are available as separate cards for sharing on social media, as well as a full collection available from March 8.
