Siamo stati molto provati, oltre le nostre forze, tanto da farci disperare perfino della vitas. Anzi, avevamo già noi stessi pronunciato la nostra sentenza di morte, affinché non mettesssimo la nostra fiducia in noi stessi, ma in Dio che resuscita i morti.

La presidente dell’Opera per le chiese evangeliche metodiste in Italia, past. Mirella Manocchio, a nome dei membri del Comitato permanente e di tutti i fratelli e sorelle metodisti italiani, vuole esprimere il proprio sentimento di solidarietà e vicinanza, le proprie condoglianze e preghiere alle vittime e ai feriti, alle loro famiglie, a tutti coloro che sono coinvolti nei soccorsi e ai governi dello Sri Lanka, dell’Irlanda del Nord e delle Filippine che sono stati duramente colpiti da vili attacchi terroristici e disastri naturali durante il fine settimana di Pasqua.
Come metodisti italiani, condanniamo fermamente gli attacchi perpetrati ai luoghi di culto in Sri Lanka nel giorno di Pasqua e non consideriamo credenti coloro che portano la morte in nome di un Dio che, invece, nell’Islam, nell’ebraismo e nel cristianesimo è un Dio che vuole la salvezza dell’umanità, un Dio di amore e di pace.
Siamo anche rattristati dal riemergere dei conflitti nell’Irlanda del Nord e dal nuovo attacco della New IRA che nella notte del Venerdì Santo ha causato la morte della giornalista Lyra Mckee.
Siamo vicini alla sua famiglia e all’intero Paese, sapendo che non dobbiamo lasciarci sopraffare e totalmente dall’odio, ma invece dobbiamo sempre mantenere la nostra fede salda e viva in Dio che ci dice di sperare anche quando tutto sembra perduto.
La nostra speranza è forte nel nostro Dio misericordioso “il quale ci consola in ogni afflizione, affinché, mediante la consolazione con la quale siamo noi stessi da Dio consolati, possiamo consolare quelli che si trovano in qualunque afflizione.” (II Corinzi 1:4)
For we were so utterly, unbearably crushed that we despaired of life itself. Indeed, we felt that we had received the sentence of death so that we would rely not open ourselves but on God who raised the dead.

The President of the Italian Methodist Church, past. Ms Mirella Manocchio, on behalf of the members of the Standing Committee and of all the Italian Methodist brothers and sisters, wants to address their feelings of sympathy and closeness, their condolences and their prayers to the victims and the wounded, their families, everyone those involved in the relief efforts and governments of Sri Lanka, Northern Ireland and the Philippines who were so severely affected by vile terrorist attacks and natural disasters over the Easter weekend.
As Italian Methodists, we firmly condemn the attacks perpetrated on places of worship in Sri Lanka on Easter Day and do not consider those who bring death to be believers based on a God who in Islam, Judaism and Christianity is a God who wants salvation of humanity, a God of love and peace.
We are also saddened by the re-emergence of the conflicts in Northern Ireland and by the New IRA attack that on the night of Good Friday caused the death of journalist Ms Lyra Mckee.
We are close to her family and to the whole country, knowing that we must not let ourselves be overwhelmed and totally overcome by hatred, but instead we must always keep our faith firm and alive in a God who tells us to hope even when everything seems lost.
Our hope is solid upon our mercy Lord “who consoles us in all our affliction, so that we may be able to console those who are in any affliction with the consolation with which we ourselves are consoled by God.” (II Corinthian 1,4)
